Research Proposal: Gerontechnology & Digital Equity

Project type

Research Paper

Date

September 2024

As the global workforce ages, the need to support older workers in adapting to new technologies is crucial. This research explores how learning design can promote digital equity among older employees by addressing barriers to digital literacy and participation in e-learning programs. Current studies highlight the significant digital divide between generations, with older workers often facing anxiety, technophobia, and cognitive challenges when engaging with digital tools. By synthesizing findings from literature on gerontechnology and digital equity, this study aims to identify how tailored learning interventions, including scaffolding, accessibility improvements, and hands-on practice, can bridge this gap. A qualitative research approach will examine older workers' experiences with e-learning, employing pre- and post-training surveys to assess the effectiveness of instructional methods in enhancing digital skills. This study also investigates the organizational benefits of including older workers in digital upskilling efforts, such as improved collaboration and knowledge retention. While the small sample size may limit generalizability, this research will provide valuable insights into how learning design can enhance digital equity for older adults, fostering an inclusive and multigenerational workforce.
