The technical skill assessed is the ability to properly thread a SINGER HD4411 Prisma Heavy Duty sewing machine. The assessment measures learners’ understanding and execution of the threading process, including winding and inserting the bobbin, threading the upper thread, and verifying proper tension for machine functionality. I created this assessment and accompanying job aid to provide a standardized, measurable way to ensure learners were prepared before moving to more complex sewing techniques.
Purpose
New sewers often struggle with machine setup, which can lead to frustration and wasted time troubleshooting. By establishing a clear, step-by-step performance assessment, this tool helps build foundational confidence and prevents common operational errors. The assessment ensures learners can identify machine parts, thread the machine correctly, and troubleshoot basic threading issues.
Process and Tools
I designed the assessment structure and scoring rubric in Google Docs and MS Word, and created a visual job aid graphic using Canva to support learners during practice. This tool was implemented as part of the technical onboarding curriculum.
